THE
FORTIFIED CHURCHES AROUND SIBIU
The south - eastern part of Transylvania, corresponding
to the area where German communities
have been colonized (Flandrens, Teutons,
Saxons) by the kings of Hungary, has
a specific character. It is conferred
by the frequency of the fortified churches,
dating since the XIIth - XVIth centuries,
present in most of the villages colonized
by the German population, known under
the name of Saxons.
Such church - castles are found in other
parts of the medieval Europe, too, especially
in the Germanic area and in the South
of France, but their frequency and degree
of preservation is here greater then
anywhere in the world.
Their typology is various, passing from
the proper religious dwelling, fortified
for defense, and unfortified churches
sorrounded by walls and towers of defense,
to church - castles, endowed with many
fortified precints and bastions. One
of them sheltered buildings with different
functions: storage spaces under the
shape of bricks annexed to the walls,
fountains, schools, the priests' dwellings
and even town halls.
In Transylvania most of them started
by being churches in Romanic basilica
type (XIIIth century) or Gothic type
(XIVth - XVth centuries) that, as a
result of the Ottoman invasions from
the XVth - XVIIth centuries, have modified
their structure through overraisings,
vaults, fortification of the towers
or edifices. So, the initial Romanic
style was replaced with elements characteristic
for the late and mature Gothic style.
The churches, fortified or not, have
been sorrounded by walls, towers and
bastions of defense of a various and
picturesque diversity.
The greater frequency of fortified churches
is found in the Province Sibiu, divided,
in the XIVth century, in seven Chairs
(Orastie, Sebes, Miercurea, Sibiu, Nocrich,
Cincu and Rupea), as well as in the
localities from around Medias (from
The Two Chairs, Medias and Seica Mare).
Unlike the castles from the West of
Europe, the church - castles from the
South - Eastern part of Transylvania
were not permanently inhabited. They
had sacral functions, of sheltering
the population and of defeating it.
