The Balneoclimatic Resort Ocna Sibiului

The first serious researches on the curative effects of the salted lakes are done in 1820. After that, the resort is gradually arranged. Around the lakes cabins are built, trees are planted and pavilions are raised for cold worm bathings. The resort was officially inaugurated in the 20th of June 1858. Between 1906 - 1909, the central pavilion and the bathings house were raised; they are still existing. They have spaces for warm bathings, mud packings, aerosols, basins. Since 1948 - Ocna Sibiului becomes a permanent resort.
Beside the pavilions already mentioned, the resort also has a swimming place with the lakes Horia, Closca and Crisan, formed after six old salt mines had been inundated (7,848 s.m. and depths of 44,5 m, 34,55 m, 44 m). They are completed with lakes situated near the railway Sibiu - Copsa Mica. The most important are The Lake without Bottom, formed on the ex - salt mine Francisc Grube, abandoned in 1775 (1,665 s.m, 32 m depth) - declared nature monument, having the most powerful heliothermic effect; The Lake The Abandoned Salt Mine (Avram Iancu), formed on the salt mine Fodina Maior, abandoned in 1817 (160 m depth), the deeper antroposalted lake in Romania; the Lake Brancoveanu formed on an abandoned salt - mine in 1699 the most salted lake in Ocna Sibiului, (310 g/l salinity); the Lake Ocnita, connected with the lake Abandoned Salt - Mine (200 g/l salinity); the Lakes of the Flax , of the Cats, the Mud Lake
The hydrologic protection area is of 53 ha, 14 antroposalted lakes as well as other smaller lakes naturally appeared. The big depths of the lakes, are due to bell type salt exploration, from antiquity and middle age. The natural factors for cure are the salted and heliothermic lakes, having a salinity of 180 - 310 g/l, the fossil sapropelic mud, the isotone water sodic chlorided of the spring Horia, the moderate climate of depression.
Important results are obtained here in cureing the diseases of the locomotory system, the rheumatisms, prearthroses and arthroses, spondylosis as well as gynaecological affections.
The Spa offers treatment in hydrotherapy, thermotherapy, pneumotherapy, mechanical therapy, electrotherapy, balneal gynecology, kinetic therapy and balneal therapy.
