The
Arquebusiers' Tower Str.
Cetatii
1357 - 1366
"The Arquebusiers' Tower is the most southern
of the three. It has the shape of an octagonal
prism with a relieved upper side. The battlements
on the first floor, keyholes shaped, are especially
done for the fire arquebuses. Up to one meter
from the ground is made of stones and up to
here is made of bricks. |
The
Potters' Tower Str.
Cetatii
The Potters' Tower is connected to the next
tower through a wall built in two stages.
The tower has a rectangular plan with the inferior
part on rough stone and the overraising on brick. |
The
Carpenters' Tower Str.
Cetatii
1337 - 1366
The tower has a circular shaped basement, separated
from the next part through a pronounced cornice.
From this level, the tower gets the shape of
an octagonal prism, ending in its upper side
in a relieved part, propped on brackets with
black-oil holes between their arches. |
The
Thick Tower Bd.
Coposu
The Thick Tower is the only rondel of artillery
still existing from the old fortifications.
It was raised in 1540. It is a semicircular
massive construction, with a brick structure
and a platform for cannons.
In 1788 the first theatre is inaugurated here,
theatre founded by Martin Hochmeister, that
functioned here until 1948, when it was destroyed
by the flames. In 2004 the restoration works
was finished and the old theatre, known under
the name Thalia Hall, has been restored in the
tower. |
The
Stairs Tower Piata
Huet nr. 2
The tower, one of the oldest building in Sibiu,
is raised on the foundation of the oldest element
preserved from the first fortifications around
the church existing here at the end of the 12-th
century.
The present tower is dated from 1542 with changes
from 1863.
It has a single floor and a vaulted passage
under the tower reaching the stairs of connection
between the Upper Town and the Lower Town.
The stairs dated from 1860. Until the 19-th
century, the access was done through a way parallel
to the walls of the first fortifications coming
from Pasajul Scarilor (The Stairs Passage) that
continued though the passage of the house no.
4 on Turnului street. |
The
Gate Tower Str.
Al. Odobescu
Situated at the crossing of the streets Pasajul
Scarilor and Odobescu, is one of the best preserved
elements of the 3-rd precincts of fortifications.
The house Altemberger (The Old Town hall) was
built nearby this tower.
It has the shape of a prism, on a rectangular
plan, erected on two floors. The ground floor,
barrel vaulted, was the way of access into the
city's precincts. |
The
Gunpowder Tower

In the Lower Town, at the further end of strada
Zidului (Wall Street) stands the circular Gunpowder
Tower (Turnul Pulberariei). A circular massive
tower built in 16th century as part of Ocna
Gate Complex used to store gunpowder. |
The
Leather Dressers' Tower
Str. Zidului
It is situated at the intersection of the streets
Zidului and R. Korsakov.
It was part of the 4-th fortification system
and was used for deposits of gunpowder.
The tower exploded in 1556 and 1570 and after
another fire in 1638, it was rebuilt at the
present shape. |
